Researchers from Dalhousie University trained two dogs to identify PTSD trauma stress by smelling humans’ breath.

Dogs are proving once again why they’re our four-legged heroes. The furry companions have been known to provide invaluable support to individuals facing various medical challenges. PTSD stands for post-traumatic stress disorder, and it is a condition that emerges in individuals who have experienced a traumatic incident.“PTSD service dogs are already trained to assist people during episodes of distress,” said Laura Kiiroja of Dalhousie University, first author of the paper.

One facemask was used to obtain a calm breath sample, while participants wore the other as they recalled their experiences. Two canines, named Ivy and Callie, were trained to recognize the target odor from pieces of the facemasks. They depended on their sensitive noses to identify scents. Their performances correlated with different emotions, with Ivy attuned to “anxiety” and Callie to “shame.”
