Russian billionaires Mikhail Fridman and Pyotr Aven won an appeal of sanctions imposed against them by the European Union, after a court ruled Wednesday the EU’s moves were unjustified, though they still face financial sanctions from the bloc amid allegations they financially supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The court said there was insufficient evidence that Fridman and Aven supported or profited from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. There is some evidence linking Fridman and Aven to Russian President Vladimir Putin, his entourage and other prominent Russian decision-makers, though the evidence does “not demonstrate” they benefited from those relationships, the court said.Fridman and Aven have appealed an extension of their sanctions approved by the EU last month.
