The incident occurred in the city of Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero, where violent protests have been taking place in recent weeks in response to the murder of a student from the Ayotzinapa Rural Normal School. The student, Yanqui Gómez, was shot by police at a street checkpoint on March 7. The death of Yanqui Gómez has sparked a political crisis in Guerrero, leading to the resignation of the Secretary of Government, the Secretary of Security, and the state prosecutor.
