In the Austin area, we will be under totality between about 1:34 p.m. and 1:40 p.m. But will the weather hold up so we can see it? At this point, our sources are pointing towards, no.Our two main meteorological models are picking up on a system of moisture and rain moving up from northern Mexico. But, again this is still seven days away from the event, and models change all the time.
Both the European and GFS models show mostly cloudy skies over a good portion of Texas, with rain chances favoring Central Texas and East Texas. For eclipse viewers, if it is just cloudy, you will notice the sky darkening, but viewing the actual eclipse will not be possible. We also have increasing evidence that cloudier conditions will be around, as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association has put Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio in the above-average threshold for precipitation early next week.Again, we will continue to monitor updates every day, but if you are traveling to Central Texas for the Great American Eclipse of 2024, maybe start thinking about a backup plan.
At the moment models are outputting clearer skies across the Northeast U.S., but again this is all subject to change.
