The University of York has been caught up in a censorship row over a student's Hong Kong protest during a graduation ceremony.
He has accused the university of 'censoring what they dislike', while ex-Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith - a leading critic of China - claimed it was 'in hock to' Beijing. According to correspondence seen by the i, Mr Ma notified Charlie Jeffrey, the university's vice-chancellor, of his intention to protest peacefully.
But for the 10 seconds that Mr Ma went on stage to collect his graduation certificate, the livestream was interrupted and switched to a generic image of the University of York's logo. The ambassador was previously reported to have told Chinese students in Britain 'to keep in mind' Chinese leader Xi Jinping's 'ardent teachings, adhere to patriotism and serving the country'.Mr Ma added in his LinkedIn post: 'I just wish my action serves as a glimmer of hope under the iron curtain of the China Communist Party.
Sir Iain, who is among a number of MPs and peers to have been sanctioned by China for speaking out over human rights concerns, claimed the incident was 'very sad and shows York University is scared of upsetting the Chinese government,' adding that it was 'a sad indictment of the university authorities'.
