Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson are some of the most recognisable cartoons in history thanks to their distinctive features but have you ever wondered why their skin is bright yellow?

The cartoon series The Simpsons has been running for an astonishing 34 years, since it started airing in January 1990. The characters of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie have become beloved mainstays on television, along with a host of other characters in the show.

According to the show's creator, Matt Groening, the reason behind this unique choice is simply that he and his team of animators wanted to create something different when they were first designing the cartoon. That's when they decided to give the characters yellow skin."An animator came up with the Simpsons' yellow and as soon as she showed it to me I said, 'This is the answer! '," Matt explained in a 2007 interview.
