Pro surfing’s controversial mid-season cut pitted two of Australia’s brightest surfers against each other as a local high school student knocked off two-time defending champion Tyler Wright.

rang out in a day of carnage at Bells Beach as 18-year-old local high school student Ellie Harrison wrought havoc and the brutal reality of the pro tour’s mid-season cut dawned on a host of the world’s best surfers.

After next month’s Margaret River Pro, the mens’ field will drop from 36 to 24, the women’s from 18 to 12 .Especially galling for Torquay’s Robinson, her home break just wouldn’t work for her when she needed it most, the 23-year-old left waiting forlornly for a wave with her immediate career on the line.

McCulloch’s own Bells exit later in the day though leaves her placed even more precariously than No.15 Robinson. And thanks to teenage upstart Harrison, even back-to-back defending Bells champ Tyler Wright is no longer safe – potentially slipping as low as 10th pending other results.. A day later it was Wright feeling the wrath of the local’s giant-killing run – downed in a tense 13.73 to 12.74 battle that was only decided minutes after the final buzzer.
