“Really, it’s a decision for each family to make individually, to find the ideal for them. The research is all correlational, so it’s hard to make firm conclusions,” she caveats, adding that academic research didn’t determine her own family planning. “But health research suggests that with a smaller age gap the woman’s body is depleted from their previous pregnancy and with a wider gap the body has returned to a pre-pregnancy state and it’s harder to go back.
Her observation is backed up by research which shows a sibling gap narrower than two years is negative academically. “Closely spaced siblings are less likely to complete high school and attend college,” Dr Goodwin explains.suggests this is true of both, or all, siblings, in a correlational study so age of marriage, breastfeeding and socio-economic status could all have some influence.
