Mackey believes it’s good for Alabama’s schools and hopes it improves parent involvement.MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Parents will now have a better understanding of what’s being taught in their child’s classroom. Governor Kay Ivey recently signed the ‘parental right to know bill’ which requires public school teachers post their curriculum online for parents and a guardians to view.
State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey said he was able to give input on the bill to ensure it doesn’t put new burdens on teachers, and won’t take away a teacher’s judgement. “It does not take away from a teacher’s ability to make changes on a day to day basis as they need to,” Mackey added.“We really need parents to be engaged in the learning process. And I think that was really the impetus behind this is how do we help parents engage in what’s going on in the child’s classroom.”
The new law also requires that there be a process for the parents and guardians to question or complain about the what’s being taught in their child’s classroom and request a meeting with the teacher to discuss their concerns. The new law goes into effect in June.
