Buhlungu says his five years as VC of Fort Hare have been nothing short of a horror movie show; he witnessed the killing of his colleagues during a series of murders believed to be linked to a tender corruption syndicate that has cost the institution millions of rands.“People think, shame, he is hiding under his bed, but I am not. No, I am on campus every day, cheering our students on.

Describing the mood around campus during the time of the killings, he said there was an atmosphere of fear across campus among students, ordinary staff, and more senior people. During this time, Buhlungu said the university never stopped working; it was business as usual at the university, which has a proud history, and a number of the university’s alumni became leaders of their countries.
