Earth Hour — when people turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour as a symbol of commitment to the planet — takes place Saturday, March 23 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns across 187 countries and territories to raise awareness for energy consumption and effects on the environment.
A number of groups and organizations are encouraging people to take part in the event, including the Rainbow District School Board, which is encouraging families to shut the lights off for an hour on Saturday evening. “Environmental Education and Sustainability is an important priority for Rainbow District School Board,” said Director of Education Bruce Bourget. “Our schools have demonstrated that even the smallest changes can have profound impacts.”
He added: “Students are adopting the values and behaviours required for sustainability, transferring what they are learning in the classroom into their homes and communities. This generation is paving the path forward for those who will follow in their footsteps.” Rainbow District School Board will turn off all non-essential interior and exterior lights in its schools and at the Centre for Education.
