A New York City school board is demanding the city's education department convene a commission to review its gender identity guidelines concerning girls’ athletics. Manhattan's District 2 Community Education Council approved the resolution in an 8-3 vote Wednesday. The commission would be tasked with examining and proposing amendments to the New York City Department of Education’s (NYC DOE) guidelines.
The commission would also include perspectives from public school female athletes, coaches, medical professionals and 'evolutionary biology experts.' Any ultimate changes to NYC DOE's guidelines would be the result of an 'inclusive' and 'evidence-based' process, according to the resolution. The resolution was formed out of concerns that the city’s education department neglected to incorporate viewpoints from individuals involved in girls’ sports when it created the guidelines in 2019
