The conferences come one day after the combined legislature failed to override Governor Dunleavy’s veto of an education bill which would have raised the Base Student Allocation by $680 per student.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Education once again took center stage at a series of press availabilities from the Alaska House and Senate Majorities held on Tuesday, March 19.

Meanwhile, Representative Tom McKay, a Republican from Anchorage, said $680 likely would not make it past the budget talks later in the session. The bill, sponsored by the House Resources Committee, includes many of the provisions of SB 140, including funding for students in Kindergarten through 3rd Grade who are struggling with reading, and faster internet for rural schools.

No timeline was available for when the new bill would make it to a House vote. It currently sits in the House Education Committee. The Senate Majority held its press conference directly after that of the House.
