The International Olympic Committee announced Tuesday athletes from Russia and Belarus are not able to participate in the Summer Olympics’ opening ceremony in Paris this summer—as organizers try to sanction the two countries over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine while still allowing individual athletes to participate.Russia and Belarus and will compete as Individual Neutral Athletes, and they will not be able to participate in the opening ceremony in Paris.

If Russian or Belarusian athletes win a medal during the summer games, the IOC said Tuesday the Individual Neutral Athlete flag will be flown and the group’s anthem will be played during the victory ceremonies.58. That’s how many athletes from Russia and Belarus the IOC experts project to qualify for the Olympic Games this summer.
