Researchers from the University of British Columbia said they've identified a potentially new population of open-ocean orcas, which hunt the biggest predators on the planet.

A photo of an orca from what researchers are calling a new population of the marine mammals is shown in this undated handout photo. University of British Columbia researchers say the pod of 49 orcas could belong to a unique oceanic population found near California and Oregon. Researchers said the orcas that were observed in nine encounters from 1997 to 2021 could either belong to a subpopulation of transient killer whales or a unique oceanic population. In another encounter that took place in 2001 about 350 kilometres off the California coast, seven killer whales from the same group were observed scavenging from a leatherback turtle.

The study said the individuals they encountered shared physical similarities with both transient and offshore ecotypes, but were not “a perfect fit” with either.Leave car keys by the front door to avoid home invasion, Toronto police officer says
