Rising numbers of pupils with mental health problems since the pandemic is fuelling persistent absences from classrooms.

Official data from the NHS have revealed that one in five children aged eight to 16 had a probable mental health condition David Johnston revealed that 35 per cent of pupils in schools and students in further education colleges in England had access to a mental health support team as of 31 March 2023.

In his written answer, Mr Johnston said: “The Early Evaluation of the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Trailblazer programme, published by the National Institute for Health Research in February 2023, revealed substantial progress in MHST implementation, despite challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Work is already underway with partners to ensure that learnings are used to inform current and future practice
