Former Carmel High School Vice Principal Debra Puente recently pleaded not guilty to criminal charges of failing to report child abuse. The District Attorney’s office charged Puente with failure of a mandated report to report child abuse or neglect on Jan. 29. According to the criminal complaint documents, the District Attorney’s office alleges that Puente’s failure to report occurred “on or between” March 1, 2022 through Feb. 9, 2023.
The District Attorney’s Office confirmed that an investigation by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office led to the charges against Puente. The Sheriff’s Office declined to provide information on the investigation due to it being open. According to California Penal Code, all school district employees and administrators are mandated reporters, meaning they are required by law to report all known or suspected cases of child abuse or neglect – regardless of whether the allegations are valid.
