The Greater Victoria School District is hosting a public budget meeting on Thursday to gather input on budget priorities for the 2024-25 school year.
Those attending will be able to ask questions and participate in discussions, and will be given details on how funds are allocated. The meeting will run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Spectrum Community School, 957 Burnside Rd. West. For those unable to attend, the presentation and documentation will be posted at www.sd61.bc.ca.The first reading of the district’s 2024-25 budget bylaw will be on April 9, with passing of the bylaw expected April 11.
Last year, the board passed a $300.7-million budget that avoided proposed cuts to middle-school music and elementary-strings programming through measures including a 10 per cent cut to all departments, reductions in spending on communications and use of contingency funds. The 2022-23 budget had included a $209,000 cut to elementary strings programs, but donations from the community — including $125,000 from the Patrick McNally Foundation — saved it for the next year.
All of the province’s 60 school districts are required to submit a balanced budget each year by June 30.
