John O'Neill, a longtime basketball coach at Rancho Buena Vista High School and Palomar College who won more than 600 career games over 40 years, died Friday following a brief illness. He was 80. After stints in the CIF Southern Section, O'Neill was hired in 1987 as the first coach at RBV. In 12 seasons with the Longhorns, he posted a 218-129 record, winning five straight league championships to finish his time there.

Current RBV boys coach Aaron Abrams, Vista boys coach Anthony Bolton, San Marcos boys coach Dante Carey, Mission Hills girls coach Chris Kroesch and former Orange Glen boys coach Chris Featherly are all graduates of either RBV or Palomar College. So is Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who played one season of basketball under O'Neill at RBV. Oceanside athletic director and boys basketball coach Brad Hollingsworth coached under O'Neill at Palomar.
