A man raped by a student priest in 2003 while his father was dying has told a Melbourne court the 'evil' act still gives him sleepless nights. 9News

His 12-year-old victim - now an adult - delivered an emotional statement to the court via video link today, saying it was "the hardest thing I've ever had to read".

"To betray your dying best friend ... by raping their young son is one of the most evil acts I've ever heard of ... even worse than murder," the man said.The man said he'd had about 2000 sleepless nights over the years, and often woke in the middle of the night."I have to remind myself he's locked up.

Judge Greg Lyon said he doubted Pavlou had learnt anything over the years after "taking advantage of a dying man's family".
