For the over 30,600 homeless students in Missouri, making it to school on time is just one of many challenges to completing school. Angelina and her mom spend hours on the bus every day getting to school and finding a place to sleep. (stlpublicradio)

It’s 8:45 in the morning. The 8-year-old is already late for school. She didn’t go to bed until after 2 a.m., because sleeping at her great-aunt’s home in the Walnut Park neighborhood in north St. Louis was not the plan. They couldn’t get into her mom’s sister’s apartment a few miles away. So it was back on the bus.30,600 homeless children in MissouriAngelina, her 2-year-old brother and their mother, Menishia, have been homeless for nearly two years.

Menishia will grab a free cup of coffee and cookies from the bank branch near her daughter’s school. It’s all she eats some days.Angelina goes to Adams Elementary School, in The Grove, six miles from her great-aunt’s house. “I hate it just because of the situation itself,” Menishia says. “It also leaves you open to scrutiny in the sense where people feel like it’s your fault and you like your situation. If you tell somebody that you’re homeless for two years they will be like, ‘You must like it that way,’ or, ‘You ain’t trying to do nothing to get out of it,’ when it can be totally polar opposite.”Menishia quizzes Angelina in math as they wait for a bus.

stlpublicradio Whats your definition of homeless? Seems exorbitant

stlpublicradio Transportation for less advantaged students is a general problem here in STL. Especially for after school activities. If someone could solve this challenge it could be life changing.

stlpublicradio Menishia’s average day is missing from the story-a key piece of better understanding her. Does she have resources? What happens with her son? Where does she go? Etc.

stlpublicradio 36,000 homeless in Missouri alone. Hey Democrats, when do you start caring about Americans and stop caring about the flood of illegal immigrants.

stlpublicradio I thought the job situation was so great.Seems the people who dance in the streets, from winning, are just trying to stay warm while they wait for a bus.

stlpublicradio Give me a break.. sounds a little far Fetched. The Democrats say everyone should have the right to housing so ask a Democrat why they don’t have that right
