ByANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage School Board passed its 2024-2025 budget on Tuesday in a special meeting inside the Anchorage Education Center.

In a 6-1 vote, the school board passed an amended budget that rolled back several proposals that would have resulted in increased class sizes and little support for the IGNITE program, which offers gifted learners a higher-level curriculum.

In the weeks leading to Tuesday’s vote, the proposal to slash IGNITE funding was met with strong pushback from community members. On Tuesday, parents called IGNITE the district’s “crown jewel” and others considered the program “like a second family.” Besides messages of support for IGNITE, the public hearing portion of Tuesday night’s meeting also included frustrations with the governor, who said on Tuesday that he would
