In the debate on Budget 2024, Members of Parliament (MPs) emphasized the importance of developing 'human' skills like empathy, creativity, and critical thinking alongside artificial intelligence (AI) advancements. They highlighted that these skills cannot be measured by certificates and need to be nurtured in the classroom and through work experience.

Budget 2024 included an investment of over S$1 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) computing, talent and industry development over the next five years. In debating the topic, MPs said this can lead to both perils and opportunities for the workforce as jobs can be lost but also created by the fast-emerging technology. They added that in the face of AI, human skills such as empathy, communication and critical thinking will become even more important.

They cannot be measured by certificates, but have to be nurtured in the classroom and via work experience, MPs said
