NCAA women’s basketball is having a moment, long lines snaking around arenas just so fans can watch Iowa’s Caitlin Clark’s dazzling play, sellout crowds, South Carolina about to break its own attendance record, and a growing schedule of much-watched games televised on major networks.

Sports fans—and many folks who aren’t—know the names of Clark, Watkins, and LSU’s Angel Reese. Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer passed longtime Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski to become the winningest coach in college basketball history.

In the 1970s the NCAA opposed Title IX and had no interest in women’s sports. So women formed their own organization to sponsor championships, the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. By the early 1980s, the NCAA realized money could be made from women’s sports and began offering its own championship, soon taking over women’s sports entirely with its greater funding and TV access than the AIAW could ever offer....

USA Today sports writer Lindsay Schnell told me that a number of converging influences have also added to the popularity of women’s basketball right now. As people have become more interested, networks have begun to air more games, so watching women’s basketball on TV is easier than ever. Also, social media have allowed players to grow their fan base.
