Texas is both central to America’s democracy and emblematic of its challenges and divisions. In the 2020 election, Texas ranked last in voter turnout, and other measures of civic engagement show a flagging faith in our institutions and systems. In response, The Texas Tribune has set out to understand the people and processes that uphold our state’s democracy and how Texas institutions can more effectively work on behalf of the state’s residents.
On Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the A300 Special Events Center at University of Houston-Downtown, The Texas Tribune will convene a diverse group of Texans and experts in multiple fields to discuss the state of democracy in Texas, what can be done to reinvigorate trust and encourage civic engagement, and how we can work together to solve challenges on local, regional and statewide levels.
