A student has been shot by police after bringing a firearm to a Mesquite school on Monday morning, police said.
According to the Mesquite Police Department, officers responded to a call about a person with a gun at the school located at 3200 Oates Drive. School officials said in statement on Monday morning that a student was discovered to have brought a firearm onto school premises. Officers attempted to negotiate with the student, and during the negotiation process, an officer-involved shooting occurred, police said.
Police said the suspect was transported to a local hospital with injuries sustained during the incident."The safety and security of our students and staff are our highest priorities at Pioneer Technology & Arts Academy," school officials said in a statement."We have rigorous safety protocols in place to handle such incidents effectively and efficiently to ensure the well being of our school community. Today, those procedures were tested, and they worked as intended.
