Rep. Jim Clyburn blamed the Supreme Court's rulings on aspects of the Voting Rights Act as part of the reason for President Joe Biden having"unfinished business" that is hurting his support with black voters.

A recent New York Times-Siena College poll showed former President Donald Trump getting 22% of the black vote when facing Biden, which would be a substantial increase from the estimated 12% he received in 2020. Clyburn, an influential black Democrat who helped save Biden's 2020 campaign during the primary, slammed the"MAGA-leaning Supreme Court" for contributing to those poll numbers while on MSNBC's Morning Joe.“Absolutely not. Let me tell you what you are seeing there.

“Why haven’t we done it? Because this conservative, MAGA-leaning Supreme Court has desecrated the Voting Rights Act, and we have not been able to get the Republicans in the Congress to renew it. And so a lot of black people are disappointed that that has not gotten done,” he added. Clyburn also pointed to other policies, such as the increased child tax credit, which was not renewed by Congress when the House changed over to GOP control this year, as being the reason for lagging poll numbers currently. The South Carolina Democrat did guarantee that Biden would get"at least 92%" of the black vote in 2024.“A lot of black people are disappointed that we were not able to renew that part of the Rescue Plan and the child tax credit.

"But when it comes to the general election and when we lay out what we’ve done and what we propose to do, and compare that to what the Republicans have done and what they are proposing to do, you’ll see Joe Biden get at least 92% of the African American vote in the general election. That I am confident of,” he concluded.
