In an announcement set for 10:15 a.m., Polis is set to call a special session that will begin Nov. 17, according to House Minority Leader Mike Lynch and Assistant Minority Leader Rose Pugliese, the top Republicans in that chamber.The governor is set to recall legislators early for the first time since the pandemic began three years ago, in a session that several legislators confirmed will run through Nov. 19, from Friday through Sunday.

Lynch said the governor planned to task legislators with addressing the imminent surge early next year in property taxes for property owners in Colorado due to rising home valuations. Lawmakers are set to convene for the regular session in early January, butthat by then, it would be too late for the legislature to make adjustments that would affect property tax bills or to change how state tax refunds are distributed to income tax filers, one potential form of relief.

Lynch said exact policy proposal details are still in flux but that a plan would need to be approved by Dec. 10 so that local governments that issue tax bills could have correct financial figures for next year.Proposition HH’s defeat renewed calls from Republicans for Polis to call a special session immediately to come up with a fix.
