Students in a construction technology class at a Catholic high school in Whitby are not only learning new skills, they’re helping dogs in need in northern Ontario.

Alex Ladouceur is teaching the class at Archbishop Denis O’Connor Catholic High School in Whitby and says he was trying to come up with projects for his class that would be useful. “I wanted to create a project that would allow me to teach building science along with traditional wood frame carpentry while also managing space restrictions at the school,” explained the former professional carpenter. “So I kind of just thought about that a dog house is a miniature version of an actual house.

He says he considered selling them, but he wanted to do something to help dogs in need instead. He reached out to the OSPCA and Humane Society and from there, got in touch with someone who told him there was a desperate need for insulated dog houses for dogs that live outside in Manitoulin Island.“We’ve managed to build seven dog houses and have them successfully delivered to dogs in need in Manitoulin Island and this year, we’re attempting to build five,” he said.
