Armed with a master’s degree in data analytics from a major Melbourne university, Ramit Tyagi thought finding a job in the Australian tech sector, with its crippling levels of skill shortages, would be piece of cake.
Ramit Tyagi: “It’s tough; you’re in this limbo where you have a two- or three-year visa but employers don’t trust it and want permanent residency.”Generous visa provisions are designed to attract people like Mr Tyagi to stay and apply for permanent residency, but they are struggling to parlay that into gainful employment.
“There is some bias and misperceptions among Australian employers towards international students, including around their language abilities, visa constraints and their commitment to the job if they don’t have permanent residency,” Ms Li said.The IDP study of 10,000 international students found that while quality of study was the primary reason for applying to a particular country, good employment prospects was a close second.
