Several of candidates for school board have been endorsed by the extremist Moms for Liberty group which promotes book-banning and seeks to defund public schools nationwide.

As a former officer of the West School School Board, as well as a graduate, and father and grandfather of graduates, the school board election is of special interest to me. I was surprised to open the PennLive voters’ guide and find that none of the “take back our schools” “vote for change” candidates, who seek to control the board, provided any information to West Shore voters.

This lack of transparency is particularly troubling since the West Shore insurgents are being supported by outside groups: The NY-based 1776 Project PAC has peppered West Shore mailboxes with literature supporting these “change” candidates; and financial filings have shown support from other outside-the-district PACs.

Furthermore, several of these candidates have been endorsed by the extremist Moms for Liberty group which promotes book-banning and seeks to defund public schools nationwide. Regrettably, these candidates would bring the “culture wars” which have poisoned national politics to our community. The school board is not a partisan body; and school board elections are not partisan elections. The West Shore ballots have registered Republicans on the Democratic side; and registered Democrats on the Republican side.

Fortunately, voters can elect the “Friends of West Shore” candidates who are dedicated to all children in our schools, not to outside agendas. We can re-elect current board members Fred Stoltenburg, Tony Kapranos, Judy Crocenzi, and Sherri Moyer; and elect newcomers Tara High and Adam Trone to the West Shore School Board. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
