What turned a schoolboy with, in his own words, a regular childhood and little interest in education into the 28-year-old accused of the worst mass murder perpetrated by an Australian?

Brenton Tarrant on Saturday appeared in the Christchurch District Court charged with murder over the massacre of 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch. The appearance was brief but time enough for Tarrant to flash a white power symbol in court. No application for bail was made and Tarrant was remanded in custody without plea to the High Court in Christchurch on April 5.Advertisement

Tarrant attended Grafton High School where he obtained qualifications in fitness. A past teacher told the ABC that he was far from being a model pupil. He talked also of going to see the band Tool. He'd been south and visited the snow, hot springs and had become a "wine, mead and cider aficionado" and had tried to spot whales.

From what he could remember, Tarrant used an AR-15 and hunting rifle while practising at the range. Anyone with a standard firearm licence could own an AR-15, but there were limits on the way they could be configured, he said. It has also emerged that Bulgarian officials are investigating a trip made by Tarrant to eastern Europe four months ago.Prosecutor-General Sotir Tsatsarov has spoken after a special meeting of security, intelligence and law enforcement chiefs called in Sofia by Prime Minister Boiko Borissov.

He had hired a car and travelled on a route from Sofia via Pleven, Gabrovo, Bachovo, Kazanluk, Blagoevgrad and Pernik, including other places in Bulgaria, the"From Bulgaria, he had flown to Bucharest, from where he rented a car and went on to Hungary."Ardern confirmed that Tarrant had travelled around the world with "sporadic periods of time spent in New Zealand".

Country town underachiever...? That's crass....and reeks of inner city elitism...shame.

Sentence him to life and make him spend the rest of his days immersed in watching and reading about the rich culture and history of Muslims and non-white communities.

not accused assasin, known terrorist

Ignorance!.

Funny how the Christian community is outraged over this atrocity .... but when Christians are slaughtered by muslims nothing from the muslim community

The whole tragic scenario is absolutely bizarre.

Bootsbackon This article tells us nothing. This man was radicalised and turned into a monster. No one wants to take responsibility. Not our politicians. Not our media. All of whom have failed to call out the hate speech of the far right.

'An Australians descent into accused, right wing extremist terrorist' Fixedit

What does it matter what this evil sick psycho is called. He is a murderer who by his actions instilled terror into a group of targeted people. Like the man in the Lindt cafe, the men in the cars in Bourke and Flinders Sts. the Boston marathon bombers, truck attack in Nice etc...

' Accused assassin'? is that the new word coined by Aussies to camouflage a White terrorist?

Accused 9NewsAUS 7NewsBrisbane

I really don’t think it was necessary to include the name of the sister AND the name she goes by on Facebook considering she, one would assume, is an innocent bystander to all of this. I’d think that ought be a bit of an ethical no-no.

TERRORIST - it’s really not that hard to call him for what he is

Terrorist. Call it what it is.
