As a teacher, I have had to feed and clothe children let down by our government

Children like to have what other children have and peer pressure can be enormous. I’ve never met a parent who didn’t want the best for their child either, but for growing children the cost of uniform, and especially shoes, can be a heavy burden.

While the survey largely focussed on the impact austerity is having on school children, we as teachers saw the effect it was having on parents, too.Our pupil and parent support adviser dealt with families on a daily basis helping them to navigate the benefit system, apply for housing, money and debt management advice and access to charities that could help them.

In a coastal town with only two major employers, the vast majority of people have these types of jobs working in the tourist trade, cleaning holiday flats and hotel rooms, waitressing and care work. Having two or three jobs is not unusual.
