Two ministers have said they are in favour of proposals to ban smartphones in school classrooms.

Green Party leader and Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan said that his understanding was that the Minister of Education Norma Foley was considering the measure, which was originally reported in the Irish Mirror.

He said that moderating the use of phones"does not distract from the ability to learn, and to socialise and to benefit from the school environment in all sorts of different ways, so I would be supportive". "This is not an initiative about waving your finger or wagging your finger or telling a parent what to do," he said, adding that it is about parents"coming together and supporting each other".
