A Lake of the Four Seasons woman was charged last week in a head-on fatal Winfield crash that killed a 19-year-old nursing student and injured two others.

Christine M. Mefford, 45, was charged Oct. 20 with causing death while operating a vehicle with a scheduled I or II controlled substance in the blood, reckless homicide and three counts of criminal recklessness. She posted a $7,500 bond Tuesday. Her next court date is Nov. 3 before Magistrate Mark Watson. The crash killed Grace Norris, 19, of Demotte. Winfield Police were called July 4 to the 7000 block of E. 117th Avenue.

Mefford consented to toxicology tests that showed marijuana in her system. It is not clear how much of a contributing factor it was. She told a detective she smoked marijuana recreationally. Police noted the crash was due to “aggressive driving.” Crash reconstruction data showed she sped up to nearly 58 mph from 40 mph, then braked about a half-second before the crash. Mefford told investigators she took the road everyday.
