Jimiliz Valiente-Neighbours is an associate professor at Point Loma Nazarene University, and the writer of the documentary play, 'Kagitingan,” a Filipino word for “valor,” continuing through Oct. 29 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

Her grandfather’s tombstone in the Philippines had letters on it that Jimiliz Valiente-Neighbours didn’t initially understand. It turns out that “USAFFE” stood for the United States Army Forces in the Far East and he was a veteran of the U.S. military who fought during World War II. She’d had no idea, but she soon learned that there were thousands of veterans like him, who had been promised citizenship and benefits in exchange for their service that never came to pass.

Then, after the war, their experiences at the VA or how they felt when they found out they weren’t recognized .
