Columnist LATstevelopez on the big picture: 'The college entrance cheating scandal unveiled by federal prosecutors on Tuesday is a story for our time, a perfect snapshot of fatuous American greed and savage inequality.'

Actress Lori Loughlin and her husband, clothing brand creator J. Mossimo Giannulli, are accused of paying $500,000 in bribes to have their two daughters designated as recruits for the USC crew team.

You can’t really blame the kids for what the grown-ups are accused of doing, and in some cases, it’s not clear the kids even knew what was happening. And by the way, enough already with the idea that in a country with thousands of universities, only a handful are worth going to. On Monday night, I asked one of my students, Christian Mejia, to read his paper aloud. The assignment was to write about life in L.A., and he’d written a gem of an essay about growing up surrounded by violence.

LATstevelopez This isn’t anything new. This has been going on for decades. It was going on when Trump went to Penn/Whorton and even before that. DUMB rich kids have always gotten into good schools cause mommy and daddy’s $$$. Wasting their money on their DUMB kids.

LATstevelopez Rich people of been cheating in different ways: Trump were ordered to pay $25 million because of his Trump University fraud. Millions of Americans of huge college debts because of payments to rich people.

LATstevelopez They cheat and deny the poor who truly earn the marks to be placed in such colleges the opportunity to be there. Shame on them and their children

LATstevelopez Reminds me of the Trump administration.

LATstevelopez Is this Trumps fault or did it predate him?

Duncan: College admissions 'often already rigged for the elite’Former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joins Chuck Todd to discuss the massive college admissions scam and how the system of college admissions have to “rebuild trust” and credibility. People are saying these children did not know. This is a lie because they knew they did not take the test or play in that sport. C'mon. Trump is President. When I first read this, I thought he was referring to our electoral system.

Education consultants not surprised by high-profile college cheating scandalEducation consultants not surprised by college cheating scandal: When it comes to rich families, “they know how to get it communicated to the school that if their child is accepted they will be a very generous donor,” a college consultant explained. which is to say, there are perfectly legal ways to game the system. Donors are a separate yet still difficult issue. On the one hand, someone loses a spot. On the other, we all benefit from the new buildings, funded scholarships, etc. The problem is when elite schools are relatively closed to those of lower SES, That starts well before college. Oh but thats ok apparently. See. If you bribe the school directly , donate buildings, endowments, etc... Thats ok. Just don't bypass the Dean and board and bribe the help. Deans and the board wont get their cut and it pisses them off. Even the feds said as much.
