A letter from Glenvista High School in Mulbarton, Gauteng, has detailed what led to the assault incident involving a man said to be Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena and a grade 11 learner.
On Saturday last week, Mokwena’s name shot up the trends list on the social media platform X as football fans claimed he was the man recorded manhandling a pupil outside the school premises. The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday, 11 October. As per the usual banter among football lovers on social media, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates supporters joked that the incident occurred after a joke about Sundowns’ loss in the MTN8 final. The reigning DStv Premiership champions lost 3-1 on penalties at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 7 October with the Buccaneers – who were defending champions – winning the trophy once again.
“Our pupil, fearing that he may be assaulted, pointed at a group of learners. However, Mr Rulani Mokwena was not interested in listening and he was furious. “Mr Mokwena then said: ‘You don’t know what I have in my car, I will whip you’. As our pupil was walking away, he was then approached by Mr Mokwena who then instructed him to apologise.”Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education, said they were aware of the letter and their “psychosocial support team was dispatched to offer necessary support to the affected learner.”
