NASA will be able to use asteroids in space as “mining camps” to extract vital raw materials once the Earth runs out of resources, an astronomer from Cambridge University revealed during a radio broadcast.

Asteroids are minor planets that usually sit in the inner solar system, orbiting the sun. There are millions of them flying around and their collisions – known as impact events – have played a significant role in shaping many planets. These space rocks contain a number of vital raw materials including gold, iridium, silver, platinum, iron, magnesium, nickel, aluminium, and titanium, which are all becoming increasingly scarce on Earth.
