Trebuchets, slingshots and catapults were armed and ready to do battle as youngsters at Bay Middle School enjoyed this year’s Punkin’ Chunkin’.

The fall favorite -- organized by science teacher Brent Illenberger -- has fast become a fixture in the village’s calendar, with hundreds of pumpkins hurled to their ultimate explosive demise.

Bay Middle School student Veronica Roehl, wearing a scarecrow costume, poses with her "farmer" dad, Dan Roehl, at this year's Punkin' Chunkin' event Oct. 12. “The students have been building them for months in their garages with their families and friends,” said Hoon. “The event has taken on a life of its own.”
