The cruel economics of austerity is taking its toll on those pupils most in need and most at risk

Three months ago, the education minister Lord Agnew offered to bet any headteacher “a bottle of champagne and a letter of commendation” that he could find wasteful spending in their school. It was a crass, tin-eared remark to make at a time when some schools are closing early on a Friday to save money.

As an ex school governor I can attest to this. Despite crowing for the need for education The Conservative government is cynically against it for the “common child.” They prefer to have an undereducated underclass that cannot think for itself and will not question its authority.

There is a lot of competition for which cuts are the most recklessly irresponsible...NHS, criminal justice system, police, social welfare and so much more besides. Education is the rock on which everything else depends, making the grave underfunding of our children indefensible.
