Jake Gibbs, 19, opted to set up his own business instead of going to university and starting his working life in debt

The 19-year-old budding entrepreneur, from Chichester, West Sussex, says he “simply can’t understand why you should start the beginning of your adult life in debt”.due to to changes to student loan rules. And Jake says that financially speaking, he doesn’t think hemorrhaging a chunk of his pay packet every month for decades to come is worth it.

“I don’t think starting my business three years later with more than £27,000 in debt would have been a good decision for me,” he says.has found that more than a third of young people across the country have considered not going to university because of the cost of living crisis and high fees. Jake says high fees are a big factor in many people’s decisions not to go to university, but also cites rising costs.. This makes people not want to get into debt and instead start working and start saving for a house deposit. I can really see why more and more people are deciding not to go,” he says.
