Campaigners say some girls from low-income families have skipped school during their period as they couldn't afford sanitary wear.

The government will pledge to provide free sanitary products at all secondary schools in England, according to a campaign group.

Chancellor Philip Hammond is expected to announce the funds in his spring statement, says Free Periods.Free Periods - led by 19-year-old Amika George - launched a legal campaign in January, alongside the Red Box Project, calling for the government to end period poverty. Campaigners warned some girls from low-income families missed school during their periods as they couldn't afford sanitary products.According to figures collected by Plan International UK in 2017, one in 10 girls and women aged between 14 and 21 said they had been unable to afford sanitary wear.

Ms George said:"This is a victory for everyone who has been campaigning to eradicate period poverty in schools.

Free? Don't you mean paid for by Joe soap taxpayer?

Somebody is paying for them, nothing is ever free.....

you can't get one in hospital but u can get one in school?

They can't provide toilet paper let alone anything else NickGibb

Is that in place of books? Just asking

Where do I go th get my free stuff? Sexual discrimination!

About time

that way, the kids can spend more money on mobile phone apps and Nike trainers. How generous the tax payer is forced to be

👏👏👏👏

There should be no tax on these types of products for anybody.

Completely do not agree. I bet they all have an iPhone or another smart phone. With the welfare state I do not believe people can't afford to buy sanitary towels. Everyone has money for what they want it for. They obviously can't budget very well.

thepamilerin this should be your goal🙌🏽

Too right and why not got a step further and make it free for all women

Need them at primary schools too.

Isn't this another Labour manifesto pledge?

How ridiculous

This is nonsense. These brand products can be purchased in the pound shop. I don't believe for a second these are unaffordable.

And stab vests?

Lucky for me when I was in school they provided them. But it's about time all schools did 👍

What are they testing in vivo?

They aren't free.

👏👏👏👏👏well dono

Better give them Condoms as well

Already happening in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Ridiculous. VAT free would fine. These products are £1 in Poundland so Budget for your sanitary requirements and prophylactics & if need be, buy less biscuits, crisps and pop to compensate.

It’s a huge problem too for girls who come from dysfunctional families & can’t ask about this at home. I had an alcoholic mother & no money & no-one to help me. And this was in the 1970’s. period Poverty is nothing new sadly.

Wonder how on earth my widowed Grandmother managed with 4 daughters in the 40s no benefits in those days.

Great idea as long as it’s controlled so they are not taking home for all their family

Hope they remember to put some in the boys toilets... 🙄

what fun the boys will have... good for stopping nose bleeds as well

About time!

About time!! Why was this even an issue? Government find millions to send overseas but only just provided something that should be a basic human right

Also should be available in primary schools too. Sanitary products should be free full stop. Even more so for those struggling to make ends meet!

Well that only took like a zillion freaking years...

Swapped them for books 🙄

Good idea

For BOYS AS WELL ?😂😂😂😂😂😂 Remember Boys can have Periods Too..🤣🤣🤣🤣

It’s about time!

Justice league to provide free sanitary products at secondary schools in England

Are things that bad I saw a donation bin at a yoga school.

Next - stab vests...

Will boys be able to use them?

I hope that includes trans women☝️

They aren't 'free'. The taxpayer is picking up the tab for a personal need.

Translation: certain parents (mostly mothers) have not been spending child benefits on their children.

How about taking off VAT for what is a female necessity?

This I can agree with.

These should be provided free to all females
