Year 12 student Maadi Prasad is sitting one of his exams using a laptop computer. But what does this mean for the future of handwriting?

Year 12 student Maadi Prasad spent much of his early schooling learning to master handwriting. But when it comes to the HSC exams this week, the 18-year-old would prefer to use a keyboard than paper and a ballpoint pen.Maadi Prasad, 18, is one of 800 students who will sit the science extension final HSC exam online on October 25.“My handwriting is not particularly neat, but I haven’t had any problems with it being legible.

“English is probably the main exam where I do get quite fatigued … It did take a bit of energy out of me because there is a lot more writing,” he said. “But moving from penmanship to keyboard skills is a practical consideration we have to worry about. We have to make sure keyboard proficiency is not impacting on the assessment. You don’t want an English exam to be a de facto typing test.”. The tests are adaptive, which means the difficulty of questions changes depending on whether a student selected the correct response or not, so the results give a more accurate measure of a pupil’s ability.

“Can infrastructure cope with 75, 000 students simultaneously uploading an essay? It is catastrophic for a student if work is lost in the uploading at the end of the exam.”UK exam boards are now piloting assessments on computers.
