More and more children are being kicked out of school, as the system gives up on young people, says Guardian columnist Sonia Sodha

If a playground had a faulty swing that was regularly injuring children, what would be the right response? Line up a row of ambulances to wait on standby or get somebody to fix the swing? When it comes to knife crime, we seem to favour the former approach. That’s why Thursday’s call from London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, to re-examine the issue of school exclusions is welcome.

Military service should be mandatory - take them away from their poisonous environment and teach them self respect and discipline !

The kids need some means and ways to vent. Think of something man, that’s what you are paid for. Invest in sport facilities, care, flexible working for parents and many other.

I suggest he tries working as a teacher in middle school for a few years and see if he changes his mind.

Yup. Has to be the fault of anyone except the scumbag who’s carrying the knife.

Open annexes and staff them with people qualified in teaching and prison wardens, we had one that was our head teacher because our school was failing in the 60s.

That, but also general urban decay and lack of services. After years away, I recently visited my hometown, a London suburb, and was appalled by the change. Atmosphere of community breakdown and crime was evident.

Why are they kicked out? Behaviour & lack of support staff with growing numbers of pupils who fit the criteria. Add in league tables where failure is not accepted. Feckless parents who think it's teachers role to put manners into their children & a Gov who doesn't give a f**k.

But the correlation isn’t causal. Schools always try to keep students. And go to great lengths to solve social, behavioural, learning, issues. But, for the good of the majority, occasionally moving schools may be tried. “Kicking” implies uncaring attitude which doesn’t exist.

Why is this allowed?

'In the last 10 years, since the Somalis and the Congolese came to London, they taught us a whole new level of violence,” he said.' We had to arm up to protect ourselves. It created an upward spiral.”

So is poverty, so is unemployment, so is social deprivation, so is public services underfunding, Do I need to go on

Thugs were allowed to stay on at my school. Great for them, not so great for those who wanted to learn though as teachers had no choice but to spend their time trying to control said thugs. (They couldn’t) everybody loses. Passing the blame back to governments and parents.

Why are teachers responsible for raising your kids? Teach them some damn manners. Give them stability and love. On the government's part: fund schools. Cut the bureaucratic BS and let teachers teach. Make sure kids aren't living in poverty or crime ridden areas. Ffs

These people have never taught a classroom full of 15 year olds.

Elephant in the room--the majority of knife crimes are committed by blacks. Single them out for a solution.

I knew it was the teacher's fault. 🙄 The government & parents are to blame. Try modifying the rigid curriculum to engage young people. There are also numerous Pupil Referral Units available. Education starts at home. They don't pick up knives because they struggle with algebra.

No it’s not. They’re already into that culture before they get kicked out & often it’s the reason they’re kicked out. It’s about a culture in which they’re brought up. Schools do their best to prevent exclusion. Trying to find simple answers to complex problems is lazy.

Schools don’t have enough money to staff them properly. All the services for children and families in crisis have been cut. Maybe we need an injection of money in schools? And the police, and social services and housing. The list goes on.

By that logic, jailing people for stabbing others might make them use guns. We should allow them stabbing people?

Sighs... you Lefty Loons! Why not grow up and face the real problems otherwise the death toll rises.

Yeah don't kick the kids who beat up the other kids in school, they might stab people.

So what you are really saying is you expect teachers to police children? Instead of police? It’s no surprise that downturn in police spending shows an increase in serious crime. This government has set the country back 20+ years with its focus on “balancing the books”

So all the knife crime isn't because of gangs it's because they get kicked out for simulating gang activities within school or the parents telling them to not stab other humans. Ask yourself this, why was this n it an issue 40 years ago? 83% of all gang members are minorities.

That's insane

Shifting the blame from the real problem: lack of parental control, usually due to absentee fathers.

What about the primary school children who are currently being ostracized or excluded? This isn't just about knife crime. There is something more sinister afoot & it all leads back to the fascist tories, handing down fascist diktats to public services, helped by fascist media.

So what do you suggest we do with these unschoolable kids then? Keep them in, let them stab teachers and their schoolmates? Jesus wept!

So we should keep them in school and let them abuse other pupils and teachers who have no powers to discipline them

I would assume kicking kids out of school isn't taken lightly by the establishments concerned. Don't these schools have a duty of care for the non violent, normal kids and staff? 🧐 🤔🤨

Evidence that school tables have a negative consequence?

I bet it’s got nothing to do with immigration. Like that poor boy who had acid thrown in his face by his Afghani father. That happened in England. Violence of all kinds is rising.

What did they do to be kicked out of school?

No. Children excluded from school is another symptom of the cultural, behavioural, problems... it isn't the cause.

If it’s that simple, kids ought to get their heads down in school and study instead of being arseholes.

We don’t know this for sure but we do know excluded students are more likely to engage in risky activities & hanging around with people they shouldn’t be. LA funding has been reduced year on year & a lot of the support they once provided isn’t there anymore.
