Education Minister Joe McHugh says he has no plans to seek a review of the decision to remove Geography from the list of core Junior Cert subjects

His comments are in response to an open letter signed by the heads of the geography departments in six universities requesting a reversal of the decision that came into effect last year.

They pointed out that Geography is the only discipline which combines the study of both the natural and social worlds, and their interaction, and is key to solving global problems such as climate change and poverty, in addition to examining and proposing solutions to pressing national issues such as the housing crisis.

However, speaking after the launch of the latest Action Plan for Education at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin today, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that in trying to modernise the education system there had been a move away from the more traditional school subjects to make room for a range of new subjects and short courses that are important in modern life.

How about removing religion altogether

Varadker et al’s re-education programme on course to rewrite Irish history to suit their ideology & forget about their climate responsibilities.

Pretty obvious that the Government want to blank out our Irish Nationalist History as they try to raise a generation of Globalists. Without Irish History we might as well be an immigrant from fat away Africa.. oh wait.

Google is not a substitute for Geography

Any chance they might get rid of math?

They just want to make the population as stupid as possible with no sense of time or place and how we got here! We will will be competing with the U.S.A. for the most poorly educated population soon. How they could defend this barborous decision? only Fine Gael could do it!!

Perhaps the minister and RTE will let the public know how 16 thousand euro was given to Garda for a gym to b built at a garda station and the money was taken from poor box in court with permission of the Judge.smells of corruption..take from poor RTE is keeping quiet

mcass89 see this? ‘to make room for a range of new subjects that are important in modern life’.. career guidance and CSPE under the guise of wellness 😡

ministerial money saving shortsightnedness savegeography

This is very bad . And only the beginning I think .

FineGael wants to turn your children into ignorant morons who can't add, have no sense of history or where they are in the world. Just like some at RTE who thought Gibraltar was an island. There's people across Ireland like FG who don't know their ass from their elbow.

Gotta make room for teaching the New Irish’s religion of peace. Also geography reinforces identity with particular regions and countries. Gotta bust that up since we’re all one big warm and fuzzy global people.

Why would you remove geography as a core subject? 🙄It's an important subject just like history and kids need to learn about the world and the past etc. I get it! Silly me!! They need to be dumbed down so they won't ask questions and just go along with the 'agenda' 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Why o why would you remove geography as a core subject? 🙄It's an important subject just like history and kids need to learn about the world and the past etc. I get it! They need to be dumbed down so they won't as questions and just go along with the 'agenda' 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Surely business and home ec are very important subjects, yet they're not compulsary either.

This is sad, both subjects are really important in a childs education. This is just dumbing down of school to me

Utter ignorance.

Yet religion, irish, cspe and sphe are still all there

getting rid of history is just another way for the government to stop younger generations from learning about why their country was founded

But at least students will leave school knowing how to ask to go to the toilet in Irish ☘️👍🙄

Why not? This is an awful decision in light of the current social media battles in disseminating false information and data manipulation. Our youth need a solid historical and geographical base for any future path.

That's his way of forgetting where Donegal is
