The barrister for a former Brisbane Catholic school priest accused of abusing and taking naked photographs of a student has warned jurors the man is"not on trial for being a Catholic priest".
It is alleged the offending occurred between 1975 and 1981 while the man was working as a priest and teacher at Villanova College. In his closing address, defence barrister Craig Eberhardt urged the jury to be"courageous and honest" in assessing the evidence, and to cast aside other cases involving the Catholic Church.
"The Catholic Church is not on trial, Michael Endicott is not on trial for being a Catholic priest," he told them. "Be very careful looking back with the perspective we have … because of the climate and environment we are in now."
