The project has been on University Park’s master plan for nearly 10 years but stalled after a first phase of improvements were completed.
The project’s uncompleted second phase involves replacing an 84-year-old pump powering the pool and building a community meeting room next to it. According to University Park’s latest numbers, it’s expected to cost around $9 million and could be finished by early to mid-2025. No city money has been committed yet to the completion. As the city gears up for its centennial anniversary next April, it’s looking to update some of its aging infrastructure.
The donor looking to seed the upgrade began volunteering for the city parks committee in 1986, outlasting 10 mayors, three city managers and three park directors, said Alan Stewart, who also was a member of the parks committee. In 2019, city council rejected an attempt to finish the second phase. The donor, who at that point was no longer on the committee, refused to give up, Stewart said.
The donor’s $1 million pledge is conditional on the city “putting shovels in the ground by 2024.” If approved, the city would bring in consultants to determine the cost of the upgrades.Holmes Aquatic Center is only functional for about three months a year, but the project could extend its yearly usage, said Bill Skelton, the parks committee chairman.
