ALMA, N.S. — Students at Northumberland Regional High School (NRHS) are feeding their classmates. The culinary skills 11 class, the agriculture class, and ...

have banded together to cook homegrown meals for students during lunchtime.LISA ROBERTS: School lunches should be a staple across CanadaThis project was four years in the making with help from staff members like Paul Heighton and Karen Berezowski. Ninety per cent of what goes on is student-led.

Currently, the beds are housing fall foods such as lettuce, microgreens, and radishes, which will be harvested by the agricultural class and cooked and served to students. Karma Closet started as a small set of shelves that housed products like granola bars, juice boxes, and male and female hygiene products. It quickly snowballed into a community program thatLuddington and Taylor started helping feed their classmates last year. Heighton would spend his free periods before lunch hour helping the girls and the cafeteria staff hand out lunches to students.

“We were very lucky that Ms. B nominated us for the award,” Taylor said of Berezowski. “It was such an honour to be able to accept it and be surrounded by all these amazing people who have done amazing things.” While Heighton and Berezowski help guide the kids in the right direction and are there for any questions or help the students may need. The new lunch program is “90 per cent student-led and student-driven,” Taylor said.

A salad bar is set up each day at Northumberland Regional High School with leafy greens and toppings so students can make their own salad. The bar also houses side dishes such as pasta, or Italian rice. Sarah JordanSept. 29 marked the third day of the new free lunch program. Heighton estimated they had already fed more than 500 students. Dividing by the cost of food, each meal came to be about $1.50 per student. Heighton believes over time, they can get that cost lower.
