Third level education can be extremely expensive in Ireland and last year saw a €1,000 cut to the student contribution - sources say an even bigger cut to fees could be on the way

Thousands of households could be set for a boost of €2,000 in the upcoming budget as the government are set to cut the student contribution for the second year in a row.

After a helpful budget for students last year, ministers are looking to go further than last year and halve the contribution fee, or cut it by €2,000. “We delivered last year in the cost of living and we’re pushing hard to do the same this year,” Minister of State at the Department of Further and Higher Education Niall Collins said.

The two ministers are now hoping to keep and expand the level of cuts students saw last year in their contribution fees.
